Pep Guardiola shocked by instability at Chelsea as Maurizio Sarri faces sack

Pep Guardiola claims he is shocked by Chelsea’s lack of stability ahead of tomorrow’s Carabao Cup Final.

Guardiola is surprised that Mauricio Sarri is facing the sack at Chelsea just seven months after taking over.

He contrasted Sarri’s predicament with his situation during his barren first season at Manchester City and says his future was never in doubt because the club kept faith with him.

“The situations are a little bit different,” said the City boss. “In my first year, the club never doubted me.

“It was never in the media that I’d be sacked if they lost this game or another game. It never happened.

“I was surprised that when Conte won the title and they then lost one or two games at the beginning of the next season, people started to say he was going to be sacked.

Chelsea’s form under Maurizio Sarri has collapsed in recent weeks

“I said, “Wow. But two or three months ago they won the Premier League’.”

Guardiola claims Chelsea was never an option for him and says the stability at the Etihad has given him the platform to succeed.

The Catalan can lift his third major trophy in just two seasons tomorrow and says the unflinching support of City’s hierarchy is key.

“I never was a potential option for Chelsea,” he said. “I was in Barcelona , Bayern and then I came here with Ferran (Soriano) and Txiki (Begiristain).

“They trust me and I trust them. In the first season when it was difficult. I said we needed time and they supported me.

“The players knew who the manager was and who would be the manager. It was stable. That’s the best way to do something for a long time, not just a short period.”

Chelsea were soundly beaten 6-0 when they faced City earlier this month

Despite Chelsea’s troubles, Guardiola is wary about facing them two weeks after thumping them 6-0 at the Etihad.

He felt that was a harsh scoreline and insists Chelsea are still a quality side.

“I don’t like to play the same team in a short period of time when you’ve beaten them so much,” he said.

“They are incredible professional players. They are proud and they will do extra against us.

“The situation is completely different. When we lost there and when we won here, my opinion of Sarri and his teams is always high.

“When we reviewed the game against us here, maybe people won’t believe me, but they did incredible things.”

Guardiola hopes Manchester United will do City a huge favour in the title race before kick-off at Wembley by beating rivals Liverpool .

Yet he says City will not watch the game at Old Trafford because they will be focused on their own preparations.

“I think we will be in the stadium changing, preparing, doing our warm-up, getting ready,” he said. “We won’t have time to look at that game.”
