Angel Gomes must have caught the attention of José Mourinho after his most recent performance for Manchester United under-19s against Juventus under-19s.
New footage has emerged online showing highlights of the 18-year-old midfielder’s performance, as he pulls off passes with ease, tracks back to help out his team, does a little bit of showboating with his skills and proves to be a real threat in the final third.
The United youth academy product has been limited with senior appearances under his belt at Old Trafford, but it might not be long before the former Chelsea boss considers whether it is time to call him up to his squad again.
Gomes, however, seems to be in no rush for his senior career to take off. In fact, he recently explained how his relationship with under-19s manager Nicky Butt has allowed him to develop as a footballer.
“In the under-19s, Nicky has been playing me a bit deeper,” he told MUTV. “Mainly to keep the ball ticking. We’ve got enough firepower up front to get the goals in.
“So the role is a bit different with the under-19s, and I am playing a bit deeper, but I’ve played in that position before and I’m quite used to playing there.
“I’m quite comfortable there but I’ll play anywhere I get played. I don’t mind where I’m playing.
“In the UEFA Youth League, it’s difficult as you’re playing against the best team teams in Europe and the best players in the world at their age. If you don’t have the ball, you’ll be doing a lot of running.
“So I think the way we plan our games is to keep a lot of possession, keeping the ball, and we’ve done it really well in our previous games. We’ve got some good results and hopefully can keep it going.”
The Red Devils are unbeaten in the UEFA Youth League, though a 2-2 draw with Juventus has ended their 100 per cent winning record.
Is Gomes ready for more first-team appearances at United?
